STATE - STATUS - STATIC ?
transforming the Dutch flag into a Russian flag
Year: 2017
Material: rewoven unravelled Dutch flag
Sanne Vaassen, a Dutch artist, got in touch with me for her flag project. In her project she questions what a country now a days is. Sanne gave Dutch weavers yarns: she had taken the actual Dutch flag and deconstructed it yarn by yarn. The weaver is supposed to use these yarns and re-make a flag with his/her imprint and the use of his/her craftsmanship. In this way, the artist turns a symbol of a nation into a platform for an individual. I wanted to show the possibility of forced change. Nothing stays.

DOUBLE TRANSPARENT
Window piece
Year: 2013
Material: cotton and synthetics
Technique: hand woven, double weave
Size: 250 x 150 cm
Daniël asked me to make a window tapestry. Due to his paralysed condition he sits almost whole day looking at his living room window. People pass by. He wanted to look at something else. I wove a double cloth. The colours you see depend on the light: more green when the light is coming from outside during daytime, more blue coming from inside during dark hours.
After 10 years the tapestry is still covering his window.
